Good morning, Racine.
Former military personnel are invited to join the monthly Veteran Café hosted by Hospice Alliance at St. John the Divine Episcopal Church in Burlington from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. on the second Tuesday of each month.
The event offers coffee, conversation and networking to honor service as the program moved from Gooseberries Fresh Food Market earlier this year and is now seeking volunteers to help support it.
Tyler Townsend was appointed Tuesday night to fill Racine's vacant 2nd District alderman seat following the death of longtime alderwoman Mollie Jones—he earned 7 of 13 votes and will serve until the Spring Election in 2026.
Gov. Tony Evers is asking Wisconsin counties to stop using birth cost recovery, a practice that makes absent fathers repay Medicaid when the mother gives birth.
His 2025-27 budget proposal will offer child support agencies nearly $4 million over two years to help counties as they end this practice.
On Tuesday night, the Racine Common Council approved a $9.7M forgivable loan to the Hotel Verdant developers to fund a second phase of downtown revitalization — including a new 40-unit market-rate apartment building, the demolition of the long-vacant YMCA building at 401 Wisconsin Avenue and a luxury day spa. The vote passed with 12 votes for and 2 against amid concerns from Alders Sandy Weidner and Melissa Kaprelian, and construction will begin later this year.
