CRIME NEWS

  • Racine police shot and wounded an armed suspect while responding to a home invasion on April 23rd.  FOX6
  • A 42-year-old Racine man was taken into custody after an armed home invasion occurred at a Hamilton Street residence just before 6 p.m. on April 22 — police entered after hearing gunfire from inside and shot him when 2 adults and 7 children were present with no injuries reported — as the investigation continues.  Racine County Eye

CULTURE NEWS

  • Racine natives Laura Dyan Kezman and William Howell made the documentary CYCLE that tells the story of the shooting of 18-year-old Ty’Rese West by a Mount Pleasant officer in June 2019 and looks into the search for justice. The film will premiere at the Milwaukee Film Festival on May 4 at 1:45 p.m. at the Oriental Theatre—additional screenings are planned for May 6 and 7.  Racine County Eye

EDUCATION NEWS

  • After more than five years on hold, the U.S. Department of Education will resume collections on defaulted student loans starting May 5—enforcement actions include wage garnishment and tax refund offsets—and tens of thousands of borrowers may face increased financial pressure. In Wisconsin, where about 13.5% of residents carry student loan debt, borrowers will soon receive emails urging them to consider income-driven repayment plans.  Racine County Eye
