COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Racine Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department will partner with SAFE Haven to host a Community Health and Wellness Fair on Thursday — the event will feature more than 40 organizations offering resources to local residents.  The Journal Times

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Firefighters from the Racine Fire Department responded at 10:52 p.m. May 5 to a house fire on Floyd Drive caused by careless use of smoking materials — they quickly controlled the blaze and no one was hurt as the incident caused almost $100,000 in damage.  Racine County Eye

CRIME NEWS

  • A Racine man, Adonis J. Martin, was charged with homicide and other counts after a police chase on April 19 led to the death of an innocent driver—he tampered with his GPS device and will face a preliminary hearing on May 14 at 8:30 a.m.  Racine County Eye

  • Data center growth is driving major projects in Wisconsin—like the paused Mount Pleasant center—while utilities face risks that secret agreements may pass high infrastructure costs on to local customers. Harvard researchers warn that as energy use soars because of these massive facilities, transparent deals are needed to protect ratepayers from future electric bills.  Racine County Eye

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Wisconsin joined 18 states and the District of Columbia in a federal lawsuit filed in Rhode Island to block proposed cuts and consolidations at the Department of Health and Human Services following a directive on March 27. State officials say the actions have halted programs that prevent lead poisoning and monitor bird flu — a move they argue risks residents’ health and disrupts vital services.  Racine County Eye
  • A bipartisan group of 22 legislators introduced a bill requiring restaurants that list maple syrup on their menus to serve only the real product—made entirely from maple syrup instead of using corn syrup substitutes. The measure was introduced in March and has been referred to committees in both the Assembly and Senate.  Racine County Eye
