  • A retired City of Racine fire truck was loaded onto a US Air Force C-17 cargo plane on Thursday, May 8 with nearly 30,000 pounds of supplies bound for Punta Gorda, Belize. Racine Rotary, the Fire Department and city officials coordinated the effort using custom-built ramps by Larry Vail—local work that will help deliver critical aid.  Racine County Eye

  • Racine Area Manufacturers and Commerce honored local businesses and community partners at its awards ceremony on April 29 at Roma Lodge—Sew ‘n Save received Small Business of the Year, Michael’s Signs was named Manufacturer of the Year, Ryan Brath earned Businessperson of the Year, and NAMI Racine County was recognized as Nonprofit of the Year.   • Audrey Backeberg, who disappeared from Reedsburg over 62 years ago after hitchhiking with her family’s babysitter to Indianapolis, has been found safe after detective Isaac Hanson linked an arrest record during his February investigation—she now lives on her own terms.  Racine County Eye

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Racine Unified School District is hosting a summer basketball and life skills camp for sixth to eighth graders from June 24 to July 31 at Starbuck IB and Jerstad-Agerholm and a 'Contraction Surgery' literacy lesson on May 21 at Gifford School from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. The district also holds a May 14 healthcare apprenticeship hiring event at Roma Lodge and a $10 youth volleyball academy for K–5 students while celebrating soccer standout Mayah Skenandore’s impressive scoring and alumnus Estevan Longoria’s rise in fashion—each program showing RUSD’s focus on hands-on learning.  Racine County Eye

  • Rep. Nate Gustafson introduced a bipartisan bill in April to end daylight saving time in Wisconsin—he referred the measure to committee on April 2. A recent Gallup poll shows that more than half of Americans want to stop changing the clocks—adding pressure on lawmakers to reconsider the practice.  Racine County Eye
