Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 16th of May.
Good morning, Racine.
🌲 Environment
A severe thunderstorm struck Racine County Thursday evening and knocked out power for more than 6,700 We Energies customers—neighborhoods near Lake Michigan including Wind Point and North Bay suffered hail damage to homes and vehicles.
City crews, utility workers and first responders worked overnight, and power may not be fully restored until later today.
🏥 Health
Federal funding cuts have put the National Farm Medicine Center at risk, with its director warning that about three-quarters of its research on farm safety for children and rural communities could be lost.
The cuts may hinder work that has lowered farm injuries and supported rural emergency training — important for keeping children and farm families safe.
🏈 Sports
Last week, Waterford won four games in a row—one with a walk-off hit and one with an 18-0 win against Cudahy—that put them in the lead in the Southern Lakes Conference by one game over Badger.
Other Racine schools had mixed results as teams like Union Grove, Case and Washington Park split series and played tight games in a busy high school baseball week.
