COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Extreme heat in Racine has left renters at Lake Oaks Apartments without working central air conditioning since last Thursday—forcing seniors like Delores Williams and Jan Finley to rely on fans and even their car’s air to cope with dangerous temperatures and health risks such as COPD and asthma. Multiple calls to management have not led to repairs, putting the residents in a risky situation.  FOX6

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Racine Fire Department responded at 7:21 p.m. on Sunday, June 22nd to a porch fire at a duplex in West Racine—caused by careless use of smoking materials—that resulted in about $20,000 in damages while all six residents were safely evacuated.  Racine County Eye

CULTURE NEWS

  • Racine native Willow Newell, 22, was crowned Miss Wisconsin on June 21 in New Berlin and became the first Black woman to win the title. She will represent Wisconsin at the Miss America competition in Orlando this September—she earned nearly $13,000 in scholarship awards during the contest.  Racine County Eye

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Advocates with Fair Share America will ride in a bright green bus to the Racine County Courthouse on June 30 from 10 a.m. — 11 a.m. to urge lawmakers against a federal budget bill that would extend the 2017 tax cuts.  Racine County Eye

HEALTH NEWS

  • Wisconsin's measles, mumps and rubella vaccination rate for 5- and 6-year-olds fell to 74.1% in 2024 from 79.3% in 2019 amid pandemic disruptions, which increases the risk of measles outbreaks as families travel this summer. Menominee County raised its rate to 83.6% while Clark County dropped to 42.9%, state health officials said.  Racine County Eye
