CRIME NEWS

  • Racine police are in an active standoff after a shooting on Reschke Avenue — one person was shot at about 11 a.m. and taken to a hospital.  The Journal Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Racine Unified has moved forward with its after-school programs using $817,000 in Title IV funds from a recent federal thaw—officials said the district still faces a gap of over $1 million for staff development and English Learner services and may need to shift costs if these funds remain frozen. The district is planning ahead for the upcoming school year while waiting on the remaining federal dollars.  Racine County Eye
  • At a July board meeting, Racine Unified School District approved free breakfast and lunch for the 2025-26 school year but warned that federal funds may not cover meals in 2026-27 - forcing a possible return to charging families. The board also approved solar projects at four schools, purchased student devices and projectors, and praised Superintendent Gajewski for boosting staff morale.  The Journal Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Candidates for the 2026 state offices submitted their campaign finance reports last week; Gov. Tony Evers reported raising $757,214 and holding over $2 million as he prepared to decide on a third term after signing the state budget. GOP candidate Bill Berrien launched his race with a $400,000 ad buy—adding to early fundraising efforts alongside Supreme Court candidate Chris Taylor, who raised $583,933, while Justice Rebecca Bradley reported no funds.  Racine County Eye
