CRIME NEWS

  • An Oak Creek man, 23-year-old William Diebold, crashed his car into Racine’s Olympia Brown Elementary School early Tuesday, July 29 when he lost control and struck an exterior wall before coming to rest roughly 470 feet from the roadway — he was arrested after field sobriety tests showed he was impaired and now faces charges of operating a vehicle while under the influence and obstructing an officer — with a bond set at $1,000.  FOX6

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Union Grove High School is getting a $34.9 million upgrade to make the building safer and more accessible with new secure doors, remodeled bathrooms, modern triple-pane windows, and extra corridors. The project includes phase two—adding a parking lot and moving sports fields—which will start next summer.  Racine County Eye

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A bill in the Wisconsin legislature would extend postpartum Medicaid coverage from 60 days to one year to help mothers and babies—848 of 2,028 births in Racine County in 2023 were covered by Medicaid—and it passed the State Senate by a 32—1 vote before moving to the Assembly.  The Journal Times
  • Local residents attended a town hall on July 29 to hear Congresswoman Gwen Moore and State Sec. Sarah Godlewski criticize the 'Big, Beautiful Bill' for cutting Medicaid, food assistance, and renewable energy programs—a change they said favors wealthy earners. Rep. Bryan Steil, who voted for the bill, did not attend the event while officials warned that the legislation could force tough funding choices for local services.  Racine County Eye
  • Supporters of AB 269 back a bill that will classify rideshare and delivery drivers as independent contractors, meaning they will lose access to unemployment insurance, workers' compensation and minimum wage protections+ critics say the change risks cutting key benefits. Gov. Tony Evers will review the measure on Aug. 7+ the law would let companies set up optional payroll plans for portable benefits.  Racine County Eye

  • Ron Fox, 92, attends Ascension All Saints Hospital's cardiac rehabilitation program today where elderly patients do chair yoga and light workouts under careful supervision. The twice-weekly program helps patients recover after heart events (and it strengthens support among the seniors).  FOX6
