COMMUNITY NEWS

  • County Supervisor Valena Coleman and Alder Malik Frazier hosted a town hall at the YMCA George Bray Center on Aug. 12 to discuss food deserts, housing repairs, and neighborhood cleanliness. They said community plans include a community garden—possibly with Gateway Technical College—and quarterly meetings to track progress.  Racine County Eye

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On August 13th at 8:15 a.m., Racine Fire Department responded to a possible drowning call at the 5th Street Boat Ramp near Lake Michigan and after an hour-long search, divers retrieved a person from the lake bottom—who was then taken to a hospital with an unknown condition.  FOX6

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Racine Unified School District approved a 25-year project to install solar panels at four schools — Case High, Gifford K-8, Goodland Montessori, and Walden III, with work set to begin next month at some sites. The project is funded through a $5.2 million referendum, federal and energy grants, and is expected to reduce costs and boost energy independence.  The Journal Times
  • Racine native Alyson Weiss was hired as the new executive director at 21st Century Preparatory School on July 31—she will begin leading the 2025-26 school year at 1220 Mound Ave with a focus on building a strong culture for 400 students. The former RUSD teacher and graduate plans to support teachers and students with professional development and clear accountability.  Racine County Eye

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Tony Evers announced Wednesday that he requested FEMA support to assess damage from flash flooding and storms that displaced families, damaged homes, and affected businesses in southeastern Wisconsin—state reviews indicate the state may soon qualify for federal disaster relief.  CBS58
  • Mitchell Berman, an emergency room nurse and VA healthcare worker from Racine County, announced his campaign for Wisconsin’s 1st Congressional District seat on Aug. 12 as he challenges incumbent Bryan Steil in the 2026 election cycle. Berman, who led a recall effort in Raymond and filed a lawsuit against the Raymond School District, said he will focus on healthcare access and affordable economic issues — promising to meet voters in all counties across the district.  Racine County Eye
  • Racine Common Council approved liquor and tobacco retail licenses along with a geographic exemption waiver for the upcoming Woodman's at 5430 Durand Ave, and the decision will allow the business to start its operations soon.  The Journal Times
