COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Racine Zoo welcomed four new meerkats—siblings Teak, Baobab, Cedar, and Acacia—on exhibit on Aug. 21 after they finished quarantine following their transfer from Henry Vilas Zoo in Madison. The move is part of a species survival plan to boost genetic diversity.  FOX6
  • The Racine community gathers today at Washington Park High School to honor Willow Newell, the first African American Miss Wisconsin, as she prepares to compete at Miss America on Sept. 7 — the fundraiser event will feature live music and guest speakers to support her journey.  Racine County Eye

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A federal judge ordered Wisconsin’s Department of Workforce Development to pay disabled workers who were denied unemployment benefits because a 2013 law stopped Social Security Disability Insurance recipients from claiming these funds. The court order covers claims from Sept. 7 to July 30 — and the department will begin notifying affected workers by Oct. 1.  Racine County Eye

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • On August 21, workers from Assurant Global Auto helped build two affordable homes at Herrick Village, Racine’s first Habitat for Humanity subdivision located at 10th & Memorial Drive. The new development will eventually include 12 to 14 homes for local families.  Racine County Eye
