- ➤ DPI released its 2025-26 school aid data showing that 71% of public school districts will receive less funding while 26% will receive more, with total aid remaining flat at $5.58B. Over $350M in general aid is being diverted to voucher programs—forcing many districts to consider raising local taxes or cutting budgets. Racine County Eye
- ➤ Horlick students signed a pledge against gun violence on Oct. 15 as part of the Day of National Concern Rejecting Gun Violence+ they aim to create safer schools and a secure community. The Journal Times

- ➤ Racine Zoo said Kianga, its popular eastern black rhinoceros, will leave for another AZA facility next week — his last day to visit is Oct. 23 — as part of a plan to help build a stable and diverse population for his species. FOX6
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ About 13,000 disabled workers are receiving mailed notices from the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development after a federal judge struck down the law — which had barred them from unemployment benefits while on SSDI. They must call the agency within 90 days of receiving a notice to possibly reclaim past benefits denied between Sept. 8, 2015 and July 29. Racine County Eye

- ➤ Racine surgeon Dr. Lindsey Clark urges women to follow breast cancer screening guidelines during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month—she recommends starting annual mammograms at age 40 and scheduling clinical breast exams while noting any new changes. She advises patients to discuss their personal risk with clinicians as early detection is known to make treatment easier. Racine County Eye
- ➤ During a men’s college soccer match last month, referee Olu Afuwape suffered a heart attack and was saved by quick CPR and help from Parkside staff and bystanders. AHA Executive Director Katie Connolly honored five heroes—Parkside senior, athletic trainer, coach, and emergency responders—by presenting Heart Saver Awards, and Afuwape is now recovering at home.
