Good morning, Racine. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 24th of October.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Tuesday, The Prairie School in Wind Point held an open house where staff and students guided 25 prospective students from 20 families through the school. The event helped families learn about the school environment and ask questions about enrollment.  The Journal Times
  • Raymond School District earned $858,986 from 126 open-enrolled students while Racine Unified faced a $20,780,772 budget hit as nearly 2,000 students left and nearly $47 million was diverted by voucher programs. State lawmakers are considering a change to fund vouchers through the state general fund – a shift that may ease budget pressures for both districts.  Racine County Eye

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • If the government shutdown continues, Racine County SNAP benefits will pause on Nov. 1 and thousands of families risk losing food help—residents are urged to spend QUEST card balances and enroll in WIC for young children. Local officials and hunger advocates support community pantries and other direct efforts to ease food shortages.  Racine County Eye
  • On October 23, a baby girl was surrendered at Racine Fire Station 4 using a Safe Haven baby box — the first case of its kind in Wisconsin — and she was taken to a hospital for care. Officials said the action followed the Safe Haven law signed by Gov. Tony Evers two years ago — a law that lets parents safely give up their newborns — and they called the act heroic.  FOX6

SPORTS NEWS

  • In week nine of high school football, Waterford clinched a playoff berth by defeating Burlington, Case won a statement game over Kenosha Bradford, and St. Catherine’s secured a share of the Metro Classic title with a dominant home win. Catholic Central earned its first fully-played win since 2023 while losses for Union Grove, Park, and Horlick ended their seasons—several teams now prepare for playoff matchups later this week.  Racine County Eye
