ABOUT THE EVENT:

Join us as featured speaker Rev. Robert J. Miller explores the remarkable, often-overlooked service of Catholic religious sisters in “Angels of the Battlefield: Catholic Nuns in the Civil War.” In 1861, virtually the only trained nurses in America were Catholic nuns. Despite initial sectarian resistance, nearly 700 sisters quickly became indispensable to medical officers on both sides. From Mississippi hospital ships and frontline field stations to sprawling military hospitals in Philadelphia and Richmond, these devoted women assisted in surgery, managed wards, and ministered to the wounded. Known as “God’s geese” and the “flying artillery,” discover how their tireless care saved thousands of lives and quietly dismantled anti-Catholic prejudice across a divided nation.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Rev. Robert J. Miller is a Catholic priest of over 50 years, a past president of the Chicago Civil War Round Table, and a former adjunct professor of Church History at the University of St. Mary of the Lake. A recognized authority on Civil War religion and chaplaincy, Rev. Miller is the author of several works on faith and history, including Both Prayed to the Same God: Religion and Faith in the Civil War and Faith of the Fathers: A Comprehensive Study of Catholic Civil War Chaplains .
